You & Your Provider Communicating with your Health Care Provider |
What are things patients want from their doctors at a visit?
· Seen close to appointment time · Quality care · Good advice · Cure or effective treatment for a problem · Listens · Friendly bedside manner · Uses terms easy to understand · Communicates clearly
What do you think a doctor wants from patients at a visit.
· Listens · Explains problem simply and clearly · Is prepared · Follows advice given · Realistic expectations · Takes an active role in their own care
Note the lists have many of the same things. So in a sense, both doctors and patients want the same things to occur from a doctor/patient relationship.

This cartoon shows Blondie remembering items she needed after Dagwood leaves the house. How many of you have remembered things you wanted to discuss with your doctor after you left the office or hung up the phone?

It has been reported that the average patient has four questions to ask their doctor during an office visit, yet they leave with getting only one of them answered. One reason for this could be another reported statistic: The average doctor interrupts with a question of their own after only eighteen seconds of conversation with a patient. From then on, the doctor controls the conversation.
What have you done in those instances where you didn’t get your questions answered to your satisfaction?
