Guide Overview
Using the Symbols - Self-Care Exercise

What I would like you to do now is to choose a condition that you have had to deal with in the past that is listed in Section III of the Table of Contents.

Now think back to the symptoms you experienced. Go through the “Questions to Ask” and then write down what course of action the book says you should take now (i.e., see your doctor, call your doctor, or use self-care).

Now think about what the book told you to do and if it is different from what you actually did when you had the condition.

Did you find the “Questions to Ask” and “Self-Care / Prevention tips” helpful? Have you tried any of these tips before for this condition? Did any of them work for you?

I hope you found this exercise useful in helping you determine whether to see your doctor, call your doctor, or use self-care. Let me also say, however, that you, as a medical consumer, may not be sure of what to do while going through the “Questions to Ask” if the symptoms you are experiencing are not clear cut and/or other conditions and symptoms are also involved. The best rule of thumb is this: “When in doubt - check it out.” Call your doctor or health care provider.
